Enter the history of the Godillot Armoury

When he first visited the city of palms (which does not yet have this name) around 1860, Alexis Godillot was amazed.

At the time, Hyères was one of the most popular health resorts on the French Riviera. In winter, the high season then, it was invaded by rich industrialists who came to take advantage of the mild climate of the Mediterranean shores.

The Parisian businessman, known above all for having equipped the French armies with the shoes that bear his name (and that made his fortune), decided to settle there and undertook to modify the city in depth. With the help of his friend, the architect Pierre Chapoulart, he modernized the old seaside resort to give it the look we know today. We owe him in particular the large palm-lined avenues that have made Hyères' reputation, but also the Villa Saint-Hubert, Villa La Paix, La Tour Jeanne building, the Anglican church and the Moorish villa.

At the end of his life, he decided to start building a castle for his son. Due to lack of resources, the project did not come to an end. Only the stables and the riding arenal came out of the ground in 1882, in what is now Victor Hugo Street.
The buildings, organized in a U-shape around a large central courtyard, lead to the riding arena.
On either side are the stables (on the ground floor), topped by staff quarters.
Particular attention is paid to the minimalist details present in the riding arena (horse heads, mosaics, horseshoes...) which at the time housed a forge.

Transformed at the beginning of the 20th century into a factory for aluminium products, the riding arena was then in depth renovated in 2014 into luxury apartments.
The city of Hyères recognizing the significant part of the architectural and vegetal heritage left by Alexis Godillot, has set up a "Godillot Way" for the visitors to learn about his emblematic achievements.
