Port-Cros and Pélagos: a unique underwater heritage

You won't have missed it this summer: several Loggerhead turtles, a protected species, have chosen our beautiful beaches in the Var to lay their eggs. Numerous nests have been counted in the Var, particularly in Hyères, near the Giens peninsula and on the island of Porquerolles. An exceptional and unusual phenomenon, which gave rise to a spectacular sight when the wrigglers emerged to return to the sea. Further proof, if proof were needed, of the richness and diversity of marine life off the coast of the city of palms, and more widely, along our Mediterranean coasts.

Many people are surprised to discover or learn that marine mammals, especially whales and dolphins, are present off the coast of the îles d'Or. And that the underwater life along the Var coast is flourishing and harbours a remarkable ecosystem. This is why the Port-Cros National Park, France's first national marine park, was created here in 1963. This area also marks the beginning and continental entry point to the Pelagos Sanctuary. This maritime area shared by Italy, Monaco and France is dedicated to preserving the marine mammals that frequent it. Two organisations with different objectives, but both playing a crucial role in protecting this marvellous (but fragile) diversity.

How can you make the most of this unique natural heritage, a paradise of biodiversity? There are several solutions. One of the best ways to discover the area's treasures is diving. The splendid underwater landscapes of Port-Cros Island, renowned the world over, are an absolute must. For an approach that respects nature, choose professional operators with the "Esprit Parc National" label. Snorkelling is a good alternative. The coastline and islands of Hyères offer numerous sites with underwater paths that have been developed and signposted for safe snorkelling. The programme includes discovering the richness of the ecosystem and wandering over Roman remains and shipwrecks.

You can also go turtle, dolphin and whale watching. Several organisations offer responsible whale-watching trips. After just a few minutes' sailing, you can observe marine mammals in their natural environment, without disturbing them. Once again, it's important to opt for certified operators, for respectful and responsible whale-watching. You may be lucky enough to come across sperm whales or admire the powerful blow of a fin whale, the second largest animal on the planet, some of whose specimens regularly take up residence off the Isles of Gold. A magical experience!
