The unmissable : Toulon

Some say it is home to the most beautiful harbour in Europe (if not the world), and that it marks the starting point of the Côte d'Azur... Others say it is an 'ugly' city, with anarchic architecture and an unwelcoming population... We won't debate these points, as the subject is divisive. One thing is certain: Toulon is a Mediterranean city, nestling between the mountains and the sea, with a rich historical and cultural heritage. But above all, it has a real identity. Proof of this can be found in the slogan of its rugby team, the pride of the Toulon people and renowned the world over: "Here, everything is different!

It's hard to talk about Toulon without mentioning its harbour: the natural jewel of the Mediterranean, it is the symbol of the city and home to the port. Steeped in history and a testament to its maritime tradition, the harbour is a unique and picturesque sight, with fishing boats rubbing shoulders with elegant yachts and military vessels. Toulon's arsenal, one of the oldest and largest in Europe, is a reminder of the city's strategic importance over the centuries. Today, the port is a hive of activity, with ferries, cruise ships and pleasure boats regularly arriving and departing, linking Toulon with other fascinating destinations in the Mediterranean, including Corsica (Toulon is also the main departure point for the Isle of Beauty). A stroll along the quayside offers breathtaking views of the sparkling waters of the harbour and a maritime atmosphere that instantly transports you into the city's history.

In the heart of its narrow, picturesque streets, with a distinctly Mediterranean feel, the "basse ville" is home to Toulon's emblematic daily market. Typical. The old town centre, which is currently being renovated, is home to some architectural gems, such as the opera house, and we can't recommend enough a stroll down the new Rue des Arts before grabbing a bite to eat at Les Halles or having a drink at Place de l'Equerre, the city's new hotspots.

Heading up from the port, it's impossible to miss the Stade Mayol, located in the heart of the city and the last sports arena of its size in the country to be located in the city centre. It is home to Rugby Club Toulonnais, one of Europe's most prestigious rugby clubs and the city's emblem. There's nothing like blending in with the crowds on a matchday to soak up the passionate, electric atmosphere generated by this club, the pride of the region.

The vast Place de la Liberté is the gateway to the upper town and its Haussmann-style architecture, followed by the slopes of Mont Faron, the city's most emblematic mountain. Its summit (584 metres) can be reached by cable car and offers breathtaking views over the harbour. The many forts dotting its slopes and crests are an undeniable reminder of the city's military past, and in particular the Siege of Toulon, the defining feat of arms of a young commander known as Napoleon Bonaparte.

On the way back down, head for the city's coastline and its seaside district, Le Mourillon, where Toulon locals go on Sundays for a moment by the water. Following the sea via the superb coastal path, you can reach Cap Brun, home to most of the city's most prestigious properties, overlooking Anse Méjean and its typical fishing village, for a timeless experience.
